Charity Fashion Show
Last weekend (the day I got my tattoo) I went to a fashion show fundraiser at Fort Mason. Even though I wasn’t that far away the blown out lighting made it difficult to get good pictures while the models were walking so fast, so I will be posting pictures soon.
At least this time the clothes were high quality and from pretty successful designers like Yigal Azrouel, Tracey Reese, Nicole Richie, etc… but the production could have been better. So far I haven’t been to any fashion events in SF that seem more professional or polished than the fashion show I was a part of organizing back in college…

Lunar Gala
A kind-of oldie from the show! I like off-the-ground hugs and how happy I look. Also, that is my Lanvin for H&M dress!

Open Bar
They were serving purple, pink, and red cocktails at the Project San Francisco show. I opted for purple because it seemed the lowest calorie— it was basically just liquor with club soda and some lime.

Project SF Fashion Show
Last night I went to a fashion show with one of my friends which was sponsored by SFFAMA and Eventbrite. The theme was showcasing about five up-and-coming new designers in the SF Bay area. All in all it was a fun evening (with an open bar, probably the best perk).
The clothes were generally okay, everything looked well enough constructed, though few things looked impeccable. Everything was very wearable but one of the lines (basically just draped jersey in really safe colors) was so painfully wearable it wasn’t even interesting. The last collection was definitely the best. For one, there was actually a long enough set of looks that you could see a visual theme developing throughout the show. Also, the last one was the only line which had some actual avant garde pieces (I thought the white corset turtleneck mini-dress was gorgeous and unexpectedly hot). San Francisco really needs to step it up when it comes to innovative forms in fashion. Forget the eco-friendly fabric and just do something different, okay?
My only other main critique is the models. They were pretty cringe-worthy, in my opinion. Some were so dead and lifeless while others were too gaudy (this one girl would not stop swishing her shoulders around and posing). Those kind of boring ‘wearable’ pieces might have looked awesome if the model was able to sell it with more personality. They also need to learn how to hold a pose for more than 2 seconds and not just hit the end and run back… Especially considering the venue did not have the greatest lighting. I think the models need to get a hold of the idea of subtlety and lose the cliched poses and attitude. It looked like they based their walks entirely off of watching ANTM rather than watching actual NYFW videos.
The one thing I thought was great was the hair and make-up. The hair was all clean and pulled back, really good since the models had to wear clothes from 5 different designers. It put the emphasis more on the clothes itself rather than cascading curls or a strong red lip. I think hair and make-up contributed to increasing the sense of production value that was put into the show.
In the end, I think SF is still trying to find its footing in fashion. It’s better to keep having these shows and learning from them rather than not have them at all. Also, judging by the amount of people in attendance I think it is safe to say that there is definitely an eager audience.

Lunar Gala: Mélange
Here are a few more of the pictures that turned out halfway decent from the show.

Lunar Gala: Mélange
This weekend I went back to Pittsburgh to visit some old friends and watch this year’s Lunar Gala, the fashion show which I was heavily involved in during my last two years of college. The weather was cold and I’m happy to be back in sunny California, but the show was so amazing! I am going to have a field day trying to buy clothes from it (I know I said I wouldn’t buy clothes during the month of February, so let’s think of this as more of a ‘donation’). Pictured above is my BFF Eddie’s line, so fucking legit. <3
